Cairo Balady – Bellydance Workshop with Rachel Bond

17 February 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Rachel Bond Workshops Overview
In association with Arabian Nights at Polit, #JazidaProductions is proud to facilitate bellydance workshops “Up and Down the Nile with Rachel Bond” at the Kmotion Studios on Northbourne Avenue on 17 February 2018

Workshop One: Upper Egypt (10am – 12pm)
$45 ($35 early bird)

Explore the lands of the Saidi, Ghawazee and Nubian peoples, with a taste of each of their dance styles. For dancers already familiar with Saidi, we will delve into the more masculine side with stick work and combinations inspired by the Tahtib fighting dance.

Workshop Two: Cairo Balady (2pm – 4pm)
$45 ($35 early bird)

Explore classical balady from Cairo and demystify this structured improvisation by understanding each of the typical segments and transitions so that you can relax and get juicy with it. These skills can then be applied in any context where you wish to improvise with confidence and joy.

Both Workshops: Up and Down the Nile (10am – 12pm AND 2pm – 4pm)
$75 ($65 early bird)

***$10 discount across any workshop registration if you are performing at multicultural festival need to leave a workshop early or arrive late to attend to your performance duties***

Upper Egypt Workshop
Up and Down the Nile River, Upper Egypt
Bellydance Wokshop with Rachel Bond
10am – 12pm at the Kmotion Dance Studio

Upper Egypt Cruise up the Nile with Rachel to the Saiidi region to explore the best-known Ghawazee style, which has had a strong influence on the development of both Oriental and Tribal bellydance. Then get your masculine on as we recreate a Tahtib tournament, where you’ll learn authentic stick movement patterns that will add depth and authenticity to your Saidi dancing. Finally, we visit a Nubian wedding in Aswan to enjoy this joyful social dance.

Level: Open, but some experience recommended (especially with a stick).

What to bring: Please bring a stick – preferably straight. More advanced students may also bring finger cymbals.

Cairo Balady
Up and Down the Nile River, Cairo Balady
Bellydance Workshop with Rachel Bond
2pm – 4pm at the Kmotion Dance Studio

Cairo Balady Known colloquially as “Mother of the World”, Cairo is the birthplace of bellydance as we know it. At its heart is the classical balady: a three-way conversation between dancer, drummer and musician. Demystify this structured improvisation by understanding each of the typical segments and transitions so that you can relax and get juicy with it. These skills can then be applied in any context where you wish to improvise with confidence and joy.

Level: Open

What to bring: You do not need to bring anything. More advanced students who are already familiar with ashra balady may bring finger cymbals and/or a melaya.

Multicultural Festival Considerations
The Belly Dance Performances will be happening 11am – 2pm at the Multicultural Festival. If you are a performer at the festival and need to leave a workshop early or arrive late to attend to your performance duties, you can get a $10 discount off any tickets for workshops.

The Kmotion studio will also be available for rehearsals from and workshops with Rachel Bond between 12 and 2. If anyone is interested in utilising this, please email jazidaproductions@gmail.com

Rachel is also the founder and director of Inspire Bellydance, Sydney’s largest bellydance school. Students appreciate Rachel’s culturally informed, structured and detail-oriented approach to teaching. In Canberra this February she will be sharing some of her favourite dance styles.
